CREATING A WEBSITE (Yes, this one!)

Well that was a STEEP learning curve and no mistake! However, I have been making progress.
Where to start? Before creating the website, I had to get a Domain Name. So many choices out there but, in the end, I settled on using NAME.com. Why? I'm not altogether sure and I did have to buy it although there are plenty of options out there for getting a free domain although of course there is no such thing as a (completely) "free" domain at the end of the day. I've chosen the name RHA Studio (as in www.rhastudio.com).

Of course, in choosing the name I had plenty of options for the last bit, and I could even have gone for .photography. I did ponder on choosing a country identifier i.e. ".my" for Malaysia, but opted for "just" the .com as I am hoping to sell my photographs to a global clientele and felt that having the ".my" could be too restrictive for that purpose.

After purchasing the Domain Name the next step was to find somewhere to build the website and/or host it. In the end I went with Squarespace. Why? It was 1 of 3 recommended to me by a friend who also happens to be (amongst other things) a website designer/host. Yes, he DID put me off using him! It turned out that I couldn't use one of his suggestions (unfortunately I cannot remember which one now) as it wasn't applicable for Malaysia. Squarespace have only 4 options and I initially chose "Business" as it was cheaper (yes, cost plays a BIG part in the decisions) than going for either of the on-line stores although when I have my site almost ready to go live I will almost certainly upgrade to the Basic On-line Store option. At the moment, though, I can create stock items and I have my own business email account - that was an added extra using G-Suite. I don't have a checkout on the website though, that is done through connecting up to a PayPal Account  but what a REAL hassle that is. However, I can get a website-linked checkout when I eventually upgrade.

The next problem was deciding on which template to use. Squarespace has rather a lot to offer and in the end I settled on Avenue, as this is designed specifically for photography businesses. Although it is not a 100% fit, and perhaps lacks a little in flexibility, I have managed to find workarounds for just about every situation. Again, not perfect, but it IS a workable solution.

Now to build the website...........
